Excellent piece by Anne Midgette in the Washington Post. She is not as rude as my headline is, but my question is throughly justified. Why are there so many editorial lapses in the NY Times about music (particularly in the Book Review)? (Try this, this, this, this and this.) Why does the NY Review of Books never have any decent writing about contemporary music? Why is it OK, when I am at an artist’s colony, for me to hear a writer say that he or she doesn’t care for music after Mozart (do you think I am making this up?) – what would that writer think if I said they didn’t care for novels after Dickens? Why is it OK for the “literati” to be musically illiterate, for the “intelligentsia” to be unintelligent about music?
